 |
 |
At first there were four of them. Diana Ross,Florence
Ballard, Mary Wilson & Betty Travis & they called themselves The
Primettes. Betty Travis quit the group & was replaced by Barbara
Martin. When she left the act became a trio.
On 15th. January 1961 Berry Gordy signed the group to Motown Records.
Florence picked the name The Supremes from a list thought
up by a Motown employee. Their first single `I want a guy' was released
in March 1961 on the Tamla label. International success came after
the June 1964 release of `Where did our love go', going to number
one in the US & number three in the UK. This started a succession
of hits that established the trio as the worlds premier girl group.
In 1967 Florence Ballard was replaced by Cindy Birdsong, who had
been a member of Patti Labelle & the Bluebells. At this time they
changed their name to Diana Ross & the Supremes.
The original Supremes - Diana Ross, Mary Wilson & Florence
Ballard were undoubtedly the finest three girl vocal group ever.
Now Diana Ross is a superstar & Mary Wilson still tours as
Mary Wilsons Supremes. Florence Ballard died tragically but
the music that they made as a trio still inspires millions of fans.
During the following years, rumours persisted that Diana would strike
out on her own. When the sixties ended so did Diana Ross & the
Supremes. Their farewell show took place at the Frontier hotel
in Las Vegas on January 4th.1970. Diana was succeeded by Gene Terrel
but the group finally disbanded in 1977.
Since that date, the songs & sound of the Supremes has become
a legend & in order not to let the sound die, The tribute: Songs
Of the Supremes was born.
The Songs Of the Supremes show stars the beautiful & talented
Mari PIERRE who toured Europe & the UK with the Salute
the Supremes show. The show is backed by the Motown Magic
Band featuring some of the countrys top soul musicians.
None of the original members will be featuring in this production
but nevertheless the sounds of the Supremes live on.
